GAOL FOR SHOPLIFTING
ACCUSED'S SECOND OFFENCE
MAN WITH LARGE FAMILY [from our own cohrkspoxdknt] HAMILTON, Thursday A sentence of two months' imprisonment was imposed on George Montrose, aged 38, in tho Hamilton Police Court to-day for the theft of a quantity of playing cards and toys from a Hamilton fancy goods shop. Accused pleaded guilty. Sergeant T. Kelly said that accused was seen to help himself to the goods and was detained. He was slightly intoxicated. Accused was convicted for a precisely similar offence in December.
Accused had a wife and nine children and was on sustenance, continued Sergeant Kelly. A constable who visited the homo found there was no bread in the house and little else to cat. The wife and children went hungry yesterday.
Counsel said that accused had no use for the articles he took. He suggested that accused be placed on probation and prohibited. A term of imprisonment was imposed. i
