WELLINGTON PLAYERS FIRST SELECTION MADE MATCH AGAINST CANTERBURY [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Monday The first selection of players to represent Wellington in this season's Rugby engagements, of which one of considerable importance is with the Springboks, has been made by Mr. M F. Nicholls, who is receiving the assistance of Messrs, A. McDonald and F. D. Kilby in choosing players this year. Twenty players have been chosen with a view to the match with Canterbury, which is set down for Coronation Day at Athletic Park. The following players have- been selected: —Backs: H. R. Pollock, J. M. Watt, J. Fleming, C. Hudson, R. C. Veitch, L. H. Edwards, C. Le Quesne, H. L. Baldwin, J. L. Griffiths, B. S. Sadler. Forwards: C. M. Ongley, ,T. Wells, A. Lambourne, F. C. Leahy, M. W. Devine, B. Following are the results of matches played under control of the Fodney Rugby Union on Saturday:—Senior: Matakana, 8, v. WsJlsford. 0; Port Albert, 29, v. Puhoi, 0. Intermediate: Wellsford, 9, v.~ Matakana, 3. INJURIES AT ROTORUA [from our own correspondent] ROTORUA, Monday So strenuous was the senior football match between Whaka and Rotoiti at Arawa Park on Saturday that 11' players had to be treated for minor injuries and one player was ordered off. However, though these statistics may indicate a very rough game, the play was generally very clean and open. MATCHES AT WHAKATANE [by telegraph —own correspondent] WHAKATANE, Monday The Whakatane Rugby Sub-union's competitions were commenced on Saturday. The games resulted: —Seniors: Paroa, 8, v. Taneatua, 5; Poroporo, 14, v. Whakatane, 11. Juniors: Star, 12, v. Taneatua, 6; Waimana, 14, v. Poroporo, 10. WAIHI COMPETITIONS [by telegraph—own correspondent] WAIHI, Monday Cup competitions under the auspices of the Waihi Rugby Union were continued on Saturday, when Mataura . seniors played their first match of the season against Athenree, which was a greatly improved team to the previous Saturday. Athenree's defeat by 11 points to 3 was no indication of the merit of the play. The score at half-time was: Mataura, 5; Athenree, 3. The senior game between Katikati and Convent Old Boys, played at Katikati, was vt-rv keenly contested, and resulted in a draw, 3 points all. In the junior competition High School Old Boys defeated Athenree by 9 points to 0, and Katikati defeated'Mataura by 6 points to 3. BAY OF ISLANDS SCORES [by telegraph—own correspondent] KAIKOHE, Monday The second series of matches played under the jurisdiction of the Bay of Islands SubUnion resulted as follows: —Senior: Ohaea* wai, 17, v. Kaikohe, 14; Kerikeri, 6, v. Okaihau, 0; Otiria, 20, v. Moerewa, 6; Kawakawa, 24, v. Oromahoe, 3. Juniors: Kaikohe, 34, v Kerikeri. 0; Te Iringa, 23, v. Ohaeawai, 0; Okaiiian, 9, v. Green and Gold, Kawakawa, 9, v. Opua, 0; Moerewa, 6, v. Otiria, 0. INTER-STATE RETURN MATCH WIN FOR QUEENSLAND (Received May 3, 9.20 p.m.) BRISBANE, May 3 In a return Rugby Union match to-day Queensland defeated New South Wales by 9 points to 3.
