KOWHAI SCHOOL
j SUCCESS OF SYSTEM I RECORD NUMBER ON ROLL ■ - ? Evidence of the popularity of the I intermediate school system is shown in i the report of the Kowhai Intermediate School Committee, which will be pref eented at the annual meeting of ' parents to-morxow. The report states I that the school roll had reached the . record figure of 900, the staff consisting of the principal" and 28 assistants. Children were in attendance from as far north as Taupaki, parents paying train fares so that their children could enjoy the advantages of the intermediate system. Further improvement in the grounds %ras made and regular instruction in agriculture was possible by the use of the recently Jaid-down plot. Repeated requests had been made to the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Eraser, for additional playing- area but these had proved fruitless. Additional subsidies received by the committee had enabled many necessary improvements to bo made and in addition the school was now fitted with a first-class cinema and radio system. Satisfaction is expressed that the school had been included in those receiving free milk, 'each pupil being supplied with a hallpint daily. '' Unanimous approval was expressed by the committee at the introduction of the • new system of opening the school with a brief religious service and a sub-co;nmittee was considering the retention of the Nelson system in an amended form. The Kowhai division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade had made good headway in the school and a stretcher had been presented for use by the corps. A sketch club had been formed and the whole school now divides up into clubs of various kinds for about an hour each week.
