CHANGEABLE AND SQUALL? gradual improvement The weather report and forecast for New Zealand, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, were, as follows: —An intense secondary depression is at present advancing rapidly on to southern New Zealand and is likelv to pass eastwards to-night. An anti-cyclone covers Eastern Australia and is extending oil to the lasinan Sea. The forecast' is for strong westerly to south-westerly winds of gale force in places, tending more southerly by morning. Seas rather rough noith of Castlepoint and rough generally elsewhere. Eastern Tasnian Sea: Strong westerly to southerly winds to gales with rough, high seas. The weather is still likelv to be changeable and squallv, with showers in most parts, heavy" at times, especially m western areas Temperatures cold, with some snow'probable on the ranges and hail in places. Improving to-morrow howevcr on the vest coast of the South Island and gradually elsewhere.

SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST COLD AND SQUALLY "WEATHER The Government meteorologist issued to the Hehald last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland Province:—Moderate to strong southwesterly winds, of gale force in some exposed positions. Weather cold, changeable and squally, with passiE 2 showers and possibly hail in places, but improving somewhat on Tuesday. Seas rough on the west coast and rather rough on the east. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER

Auckland—The -weather in Auckland yesterday was cold and showery. There Was a fresh south-westerly wind and heavv rain fell at intervals throughout the day. The barometer rose slightly during the afternoon but became (iteady again last night. Barometer, midnight, steady .. 29.701n, Midnight, Sunday . .. 29.55 in. Wellington. —Fine and sunny weather was experienced, with a moderate north-westerly breeze which freshened somewhat in"the afternoon. The minimum temperature on Sunday night was; 47.5 degrees and the maximum yesterday 59.3 degrees. Christchurch—The day -was fine arid sunny with a very light north-east breeze. The maximum temperature was 56.2 degrees. The barometer fell during the day and registered 29.36 m. at 5 p.m. Dunedin. —A fresh south-west breeze prevailed, but the snn shone throughout the day. The maximum temperature was 59 degrees. The barometer fell sharply to 29.40 in.
