CLUB COMPETITIONS GOOD SCORING GENERAL MATCHES FOR TAYLOR BOWL \ IJY THIS HOVER Conditions were ideal for golf during the week-end and it was not .surprising to find so many good scores returned in competitions hold by the various local clubs. In practically all cases the winners of the events played below tlu'ir handicaps, but the low-markers met with their share of success. The Taylor 'Bowl competition at Titirangi was advanced a further stage, but the task of selecting the probable winner is still very difficult. J. 11. Young, R. M. George, K. W. Lucas and L. J. Clifford were among the lowerhandicap players to retain their places and as all are good match-players they may bo difficult to eliminate. R. J. Hamilton, J. Carnachan and H. V. Ganley continue to.play well and they won their matches comfortably. W. R. Vercoc was forced to play an extra hole before winning from W. J. Truscott. ...

No fewer than seven players bettered the scratch score in the concurrent Stableford bogey and N. C. McLean, who bad a medal round of 76, scored a popular- win with a total of -10 points. McLean is usually a very steady player and he is liable to have brilliant runs as last year he covered four or five holes in phenomenal figures. H. L- Robsou was responsible for a splendid round of 73 and he was unfortunate in not meeting with success. However, there should be a good deal of satisfaction in playing well even if not heading the list. L. H. Fisher was well in the running and ho was followed by N. A. Naismith, C. G. Fisher, J. L. McCoy and B. W. Beaumont.

MIDDLEMORE CONTESTS SUCCESS OF R. E. RAIXGER The scoring in the Stableford bogey at Middlemoro was fairly even and R. E. Kainger led the field with .'57 points. Rainger was out in 40 and he obtained threes at three of the next five holes, the 12th being his worst hole coming home, fhe winner is a powerful young player. Like a number of youthful golfers, however, he is inclined to sacrifice accuracy for length. Undoubtedly it is a great asset to possess length from the tees hut unless, drives finish consistently on the fairways it is much better to curb the desire for longhitting. R. 1). Wright. B. B. Armstrong and C. A. Pittar tied for second place and it is pleasing to see Wright again playing well. He played steadily to the turn and then came home in level fours. Armstrong missed a chance on the last green when he three-putted and Pittar, after commencing with throe fine fours, slipped strokes in tho middle stages.

E. L. Bartlect and F. Whitcombe combined splendidly to win a four-ball bogey, the pair finishing 7 up. Whitcombe, a young player who is well known at Herctaunga and is temporarily in Auckland, played brilliantly to the turn, his card reading—4, 4, 4, 4, 3, 3, 2, 4, 5. His total of 33 is one of the best yet recorded on the course and although he did not play well after the 10th, his partner did his share toward maintaining their lead on bogey.

PATERSON CUP FINE ROUND AT REMUERA I Results in the first round of the Paterson Cup foursomes match play competition at Akarana were much as expected and only one game went beyond the 17th. J. Bracewell and W. Thorpe were 3 up after the 10th hole, but their opponents, H. N. E. Clarke and H. N. Tills played better from that stage and won at the 20th. V. Salek and V. J. C. Smith, who led the qualifying round, and P. G. F. Smith and C. S. Livingstone, the virtual scratch pair, retained their places and they may do well in the event. The former Auckland Rugby representative, A. S- Jamieson, and Jv. O. Hume won the foursomes Stableford bogey, E. R. Bayley and W. J. Osborne being beaten on the count back. C. S. Livingstone and A. H. Rvlands, who were also successful the previous week, and A. E. Saunders and W. R. Woolhouse led the field in four-ball matches. D. B. Mansergh was responsible for a brilliant round at Remuera and he scored a well-deserved win in tho Stableford bogey. He was out in 37, three above the scratch score, but a splendid run of 34 home enabled him to score no fewer than 20 points from the turn. Since the course has been lengthened no official record has been established. Credit for the best round, however, goes to W. S. Ralph, who returned a 69 on the previous week-end.

CAPTAIN'S PRIZE LARGE FIELD COMPETES Over 130 players took part in the first round of the captain's prize tourney at North Shore, and whoever survives another seven matches will have fully earned the honours. The club champion, A. E. Browne, had a narrow escape as H. E. Goodwin took him to the 20th. H. C. Stevens was unable to concede E. H. Foot his handicap. The winner of the Stableford bogey, M, S. O'Connor, was eliminated by A. W. Christmas, and J. O'Neill was not taking any chances, as he defeated his opponent by the largest possible margin. W. Roberts and T. Millar found it necessary to play extra holes before winning their matches, but the majority of games were won by comfortable margins.

GAMES AT OTHER LINKS STABLE FOND TO J. DROUGHT Exceptionally good -scores were re turned at Pupuke, where J. Drought won the Stablel'ord with 41 points and also figured prominently in a medal event. J. Mollard, R. Nicholas, R. G. Ross and H. A. Craig were among others who performed well, while H. Randrup is to he congratulated on his excellent round of 09. J. W. Goddard, who returned a GG ne[ to win at Otahuhu, has only to improve his long game to earn a lower handicap. At present lie is inclined to he a little erratic, hut his short play is splendid. N. M. Clark and A. Bulien, who won the previous week, finished well up and 1. H. Malcolm was the best of the juniors. The state of the course at One Tree Hill was reflected in the scoring, 0. H. Weald and F. .T. TTintz winning the four-ball bogey with a card of 8 up. I l '. Rest-all. the president of the club, was successful at Glendowie, and K. Davis, who was runner-up. won a four-ball when partnered by J. K. Cameron.
