MANUREWA AFFAIRS
HOUSING SCHEME URGED SWIMMING BATH PROJECT A request that the Manurewa Town Board should reconsider its former decision, not to take any action in regard to the Government's housing scheme was made to the board on Monday night by the Manurewa branch of the Labour Party. It was stated there was a scarcity of houses in the district and that the board had a duty to assist private enterprise in meeting the position. In supporting the request, Mr. J. H. Edwards said there was a responsibility devolving on local bodies to take action. He understood the Government had set aside £1,500,000 and this was available for local bodies at the low rate of 3 per cent. Mr. Edwards said interest rates would never be lower, and he urged the board to take advantage of the scheme. Messrs. E. S. Pegler and H. 11. Maxwell also sup ported the request. The board decided to obtain particulars of the scheme and review the position. - The donor of a site for a swimming bath, Mr. F. W. Whyte, suggested that the board consider ways and means of utilising the section. Mr. Whyte said that the site at the junction of Alfristori and Scott Roads, which he had made available to the board some year's ago was naturally suited for conversion into a swimming bath. There was need for some such provision in the district. It was agreed to have the Works Committee and the board's consulting engineer view the site and report. It was decided to grant the Rugby League clubs the use of Jellicoe Park until three o'clock on Saturday afternoons and the Rugby clubs the remainder of the day.
