WESTERN PACT
MB. EDEN'S TASK PARLEYS WITH BELGIUM A PRELIMINARY VISIT By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received April 11, 5.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, April 10 It is generally believed that the visit which the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Eden, is to pay to Brussels toward the end of the current month will mark a stage in the development of events which, it is hoped, will lead to the conclusipn of the projected Western Pact. It is emphasised however, that the Foreign Secretary is not going to Brussels to conduct negotiations.
Much preliminary work remains to be done and Jlr. Eden's visit will be confined to personal exchanges of views on all relevant matters of common concern with the Prime Minister, Dr. van Zeeland, and the Foreign Minister, Dr. Spaak. . It is assumed that before the visit takes place the Anglo-French declaration releasing Belgium from her obligations under the provisional agreement of last March will be made. Although it is taken for granted that the future of the Western Pact negotiations will form the subject or the Brussels conversations it is realised that they will represent only a link in the chain of exchanges which will prove necessary before important progress, is made in this field.
