OPENING OF SEASON MATCHES IN SOUTH ISLAND AUCKLAND TEAMS* PRACTICE The 1937 Rugby season opened in tlio South Island on Saturday afternoon, when championship matches were played. Clubs in Auckland all held practice games in preparation for the opening of tlio local season next Saturday week. In a friendly contest at Devonport, Marist defeated North Shore by l-l points to 10. Hasledon, J. E. Polfe; secretary, Mr. 'l'. W. Thompson. It was reported that a match between Waikato and Auckland had been arranged for Coronation Day, May 12. Mr. W. Eraser was elected chairman of the management committee. PUTARURU SUB-UNION [from our own correspondent] PUTARURU, Sunday A successful season in all departments was reviewed in the report presented to_ the annua! meeting of tlio Putaruru Rucb.v SubUnion. The president, Mr. J. B. Rolfo, was in the chair, and thcro was a large attendance of delegates. The balance-sheet showed a credit of ,C3B. ]t was decided to approach the Agricultural and Pastoral Society about the condition the grounds had been left in after the recent show. BAY OF ISLANDS SUB-UNION [from our own correspondent] KAIKOHE, Sunday The statement that the past season had been a most successful one, both from a financial and playing point of view, and that the prospects for the approaching season were most encouraging, was made by the president, Mr. C. E. Blow, at the annual meeting of the Bay of Islands Rugby SubUnion. A definite improvement on last year was disclosed in the financial statement, which showed a total credit balance of £'s2 4s Bd, this representing a credit of £4O ISs lOd in the general fund and X'l 1 5s lOd credit in the insurance fund.
Following receipt of a letter from the North Auckland Rugby Union, it was decided to hold a conference with this body on April 22 for the purpose of making efforts to improve the standard of Rugby in the north and also to clarify the position regarding an understanding between both organisations.
