AUTUMN CARNIVAL

OPENING POSTPONED FIRST DAY EVENTS TO-DAY GOING AFFECTED BY RAIN THE PROBABLE FAVOURITES Owing to rain and an unfavourable weather report, the committee of the Auckland Racing Club decided early on Saturday morning to postpone the opening of its autumn meeting at Kllerslie until to-day and to hold the second day to-morrow. The last postponement at Kllerslie on account of wet weather was when tho second day of tho spring meeting in lO.'it was put oil from October 15 to October Hi. Ilio third day of the winter meeting in 19lM was also postponed from .lime 7 to .lime 11. The conditions since the decision to postpone was made 011 Saturday have been tar Iroin pleasant, and the outlook yesterday was still unfavourable, the weather remaining wet. with little sign of cleaving. However, the track lias not been atlccied to the extent that Plight lie expected, and it' the rain clears this morning the going should not be bad, although it will be easy on the surface. This may cause a slight revision of ideas in some of the. races, although principally in the Brighton Hurdles, as in the past neither of the ruling favourites, Erination or High Quality, has shone when the going has been soft. Both may go out of favour if the ground' is heavy, in which case Valpai and English Night are likely to j have increased followings. Horses likely to come in for solid 1 support if the track is further affected by rain than it was yesterday morning ; are as follows: President's Handicap. Armncourt. Gay Talkie, Knight of Australia, j Great Northern Oaks. —Come Abbas. ivulotte, Laughing Lass. Brighton ljurdles.—-English Night, Valpai, Sandy Dix. Easter Handicap.—Royal Appellant, ! Galilee. TAKANINI TRAINING BACHELOR KING SPRINTS The gras3 at Takanini, with the poles 18ft. out, was open yesterday for horses engaged at the Jillerslie meeting, a fid the going was a little slow after rain. The best gallop of the morning was that of the Champagne Stakes candidate Bachelor King. Valarnito (U'ilricri) gave Hound Up (Stone) two lengths start over six furlongs auj they were together after going half a mite to finish on terms. Valarnito was well on the outside, but Round l*p went better than usual. Highborn (J. .Mflnally), looking V ery well,- moved freely over half a mile. Anion (Stone) went once rounii half pace. He looks much morn solid than formerly.

•High Quality (C urwin) cantered once round • and then run a mile in 1.50, pulling up well. C. Walters, his usual pilot, has met with ;iri accident. J. F. Kerens will steer limi 111 the Brighton Hurdles.

Palustre, who will take his place in the Oaks field, also went once round. Gay Talkie went twice round, the second tune at a g<>o< I half-pace. lie goes well in heavy going. Uaepata (Tinker) ran a pood five furlongs in 1.5. Going with a strong wind that' was blowing at that time, he ran the first two furlongs in 245. hut against it he slowed up over the last two I'aepata looks well. Speareourt went once round at a steady pace, while Parquet (Bell) was responsible for half a mile in 51 4-ss. ■ She is a doubtful starter in the Faster Handicap if the rain continues. Flood Tide (B. 11. Morris) increased the pace fi'om the mile post to run his last five furlongs in 1 .'> H-5. It was his first gallop on the grass since lie raced at r fe Arolia. He did not finish with his usual dash. Bachelor ivin<£ ( I inker) and Saccone (Hatwelh ran half a mile in very heavy ''ain in 50.\s. Saeeoue was on the outside, and in receipt oi about three stojie. Thcv linislicd together and Saccone seemed to relish the going, like ®U the Surveyor stock.
