RACING DESCRIBED

BAKON GEAND'S SPEED; AUCKLAND HORSES DO WELL SURPRISE BY RECEPTION [BY TELEGEAPH —EUOM ABATDOS] HAWERA. Saturday In spite of the unsettled weather, the Han-era Trotting Club's meeting opened successfully. Auckland horses raced prominently. Handicapper and Reception uon, while Kenworthy went close to creating a surprise in the Cup. Tanzania, Kewpie's Crest, Flight, Accel, Biinren Sun and Transfer also returned place dividends. Lady Slipper ami Guide Peter began best in the Auroa Handicap, but Tangaroa. who was slowly away, with them at the half-mile, and soon toon: oh arse from Guide 3?eter and Cash Down. Trarisqne came fast round the field at the turn to win from fangaroa. Ladj' Slipper finished on for third over Cash Down, with Roman j Chief, Winhiswav and Relax, who went fast in the middle stages, next, i Guide Peter is improving.

Profiting from the mistakes of Waingake and Biworthy, who broke badly after going half a mile, Reception was enabled to take the lead in the Matapu Handicap. Wrackiess, who also trotted solidly, was in second place at the back. Xothing else had a chance with the leaders. Reception winning very easily from Wrackiess, with Bingen Sun, who made no mistakes, a moderate third. Biworthy. who gave a fair display, was fourth. Outside the three placed horses, the exhibition was mixed and Reception paid close oii a score to win. Sensational Last Quarter Waving Corn made a fine effort to win the Stratford Handicap from end to end, but she had to strike her colours to Baron Grand, who put in a sensational run from the quarter-mile. Kewpie's Crest was with Waving Corn at the top, with Dusky Chum on their wheels. Baron. Grand came round the leaders and had the race won half a furlong from the judge. Kewpie s Crest, who tired, just kept Decoy Bird out of third dividend. Bismuth broke when very handy and King Country, without being dangerous, ran a good race. Perfectly driven by M. Stewart, Red Flush, who moved a little sore in the preliminary, got up in a hard finish to win the Hawera Cup from Kenworthy, who made his debut at two mile?, and the favourite, U. Scott. Broughshane quickly hit the front and went to the mile in 2.20. where 11. Scott, who had lost ground at the start, was second, followed by Aide de Camp, Proletarian, Kenworthy and Red Flush. U. Scott was the leader at the mile and a-half, reached in 3.29, from Aide de Camp. Kenworthy went fast across the top, to be second at the turn, with Bed Flush behind Aide de Camp. Kenworthy headed U. Scott at the furlong post, but Red Flush finished best. Ironside broke early and severely checked Kewpie's King, who made a good effort later, but finished last. This was Red Flush's fourth consecutive success at two miles and his stamina gained him the victory. Kenworthy made his final effort a little too soon, otherwise he would have given the winner a harder fight. Although he was slow to strike a gait, Savoldi was soon in front in the Eltham Handicap, finally winning comfortably. Hearsay attempted unsuccessfully to head him along the back and when Mountain Flight made the final challenge, R. Donald was not uneasy. Hearsay was a very moderate third, but may surprise later and Ann Pointer, who broke at the start and showed speed for a mile and a-quarter, was last. Backmarkers Fight Finish

Going to the front at. the end of a mile, Native Tree repeated her Wanganni performance by winning the ilanaia Handicap comfortably from Tan John, who was allowed to give, her a long start over the last five furlongs. Native Tree made no mistakes and although Tan John reduced the gap in the last three furlongs, he had no chance of reaching the winner. Bingen Sun battled into third place. Native Bird went well for a mile and a-half, but the rest made too many mistakes. Making a good beginning, Lady Slipper improved on her third in the Auroa Handicap and won the Normanby Handicap in a jog. Transfer, who went fast along the hack and was second at the turn, challenged at the distance but left his feet. However, he beat Accel easily for second place. who was always in the picture, broke a furlong from home and wras just beaten into fourth place. Worthy Song had her chance extinguished by going- away badly. Connenora, after being badly placed, finished well into fifth place. With a dash across the top. Electric Bell went to the front in the President's Handicap, but Handicapper, always well placed, wore her down to score narrowly. The consistent Waving Corn, who led for a good part of the journey, was third, followed by Effie Parrish, Northern Guy and Decoy Bird.
