DRIVER DROWNED

MOTOR-CAR IN CREEK CAPSIZE DOWN BANK FOUR OTHER MEN INJURED [by tklkgrath —press association] NAPIER, Friday The driver lost his life and four of the five passengers were admitted to hospital suffering from injuries when a touring car went over a bank 37A miles from Taupo, near Tarawera, on the NapierTaupo Road, at 11.30 this morning. The driver was Mr. Malcolm Garment Laidluw, aged 26, of Taradale, who was drowned when the car came to rest in a creek, and he. was unable to escape t from the. vehicle. The four men admitted to the Napier Hospital are Messrs. F. U. Brown, H. Willis, H. Moore, all of Napier, and another man who has not been identified. The fifth passenger, Mr. G. Jones, of Napier, escaped injury. Two ambulances from Napier and the Taupo police were quickly on the scene of the accident. The injured men were attended by Dr. Biggs, of Napier. The men were employed at a forestry camp at Taupo. The road at the place where the fatality occurred is only about lOlt. wide. It appears that the car in which the six men were travelling struck a tree root at the side of which caused the car to go over the bank and drop about 20ft. into the creek. People in another car following witnessed the accident.
