STEPS TAKEN IN INDIA Keeent action by the Indian Custon* authorities has emphasised their determination not to toleratn smuggling With the imposition of higher tarifl duties in the last three, years the m* centive to illicit importation into British* India has' increased. The customs agreement with the Kathiawar States was largely designed to prevent loss of revenue by this means. Comprehensive measures are now to be taken to cope with smuggling from the Frencli Indian settlements of Pondicherrv and Karikal. It is known that illicit traffic in articles like silk, sugar and saccharine has reached large proportions; not long ago the regulations about postal parcels had to be tightened up.
