DUTCH NEW GUINEA
SUGGESTED LEASE BY JAPAN ANNOYANCE AT THE HAGUE LONDON, March 1 " 'lf the fox preaches religion, the farmer should protect his geese' is a Dutch proverb summarising the attitude of the newspapers toward the Japanese suggestion of a lease in New Guinea," says the correspondent of the Times at The Hague, Holland. "The papers angrily declare that discussion of territory is out of the question. They say, moreover, that the Japanese are untrustworthy and use every method, even the most secret and crooked, in the exorable pursuit of their aims. "The Telegraaf declares that New Guinea is of no commercial value to the Japanese. The only Japanese settlement there is a failure. "The papers are unanimous in saying that the only value of New Guinea for Japan is military. Its peaceful penetration would eventually create a situation intolerable to Britain and America."
