THE NUFFIELD GIFT

Auckland has occasion again this morning to recognise with profound gratitude the munificence of Lord Nuffield in giving lavishly to good causes. Earlier in the week it was announced that New Zealand was to receive a further £51,700 at his hands, and that Auckland's share was to be £13,650. That sum has now been received and, in accordance with the wishes of the donor, allocated by the Mayor to those institutions and organisations which qualify for a share. He was given absolute discretion, except that Lord Nuffield asked that the care of crippled children, hospital and maternity work, and efforts made for those suffering from blindness, deafness and dumbness, should have first consideration. The list published this morning shows that this wish has been respected. After institutions doing such work had been given a substantial share of the total, there remained a considerable sum still to be distributed. Orphanages readily suggested themselves as appropriate beneficiaries, and were duly remembered. After that came a long list of social organisations doing voluntary work of a benevolent character. The area of distribution is wide and varied. Thq allocation shows obvious signs of care, thought and hard work. It is to be hoped it will be received without any heartburnings, but with a thankful acknowledgment of the open - hearted generosity of the donor. The promptness with which the Mayor has acted must also be recognised. The cheque was received on Thursday, the allocation was completed yesterday, their quotas will be in the hands of the recipients this morning. An old Latin proverb says " He gives twice who gives quickly." The Mayor and his staff have thus done their part to enhance the value of Lord Nuffield's gift.
