PEDESTRIAN LANES

EXPERIMENT IN MARKING QUEEN STREET CROSSING Consisting of a series of diagonal lines between two long parallel ones, a new type of pedestrian lane painted across Queen Street a few yards below tho Town Hall attracted considerable attention yesterday. The crossing was marked out as an experiment following a conference between the Commissioner of Transport, Mr. G. Laurenson, the traffic superintendent of tho Auckland City Council, Mr. C. Bland, and officials of the Automobile Association (Auckland), which sought to discover the most distinctive method of clearly indicating the new pedestrian crossings authorised by the latest traffic regulations. The new type will probably be recommended from Auckland for adoption throughout New Zealand. In the case of the crossing marked out yesterday, the long parallel lines were Oft. apart. Some of th 6 connecting diagonal lines were sft. and others 6ft. apart, and the latter spacing will probably bo recommended> The result of this arrangement of lines is that the crossing is visible from a considerable distance away, the diagonal lines appearing to blend with the long ones at each end into a solid strip. Whatever design is eventually chosen, the .value of national uniformity will be evident from the fact that the crossings will be recognised at a glance by motorists even when they are travelling in districts in which they are strangers.
