FIFTY YEARS AGO
WOMEN'S FRANCHISE A series of paragraphs which appeared in the New Zealand Herald of February 18, 1887, are very interesting in the light of subsequent events or in comparison with present-day conditions. Wheat, which is now selling at about 6s lOd a bushel, was the subject of one item which read:—"The local wheat is coming in from the _ farmers in very good order, and the quality this season is much better than in some former vears. It commands at present 4s per bushel." A small paragraph concerning Te Kooti contained the following:—"The Government have received a communication from the settlers and natives of Poverty Bay that should this dreaded personage (Te Kooti) go to Gisborne f>/ere will certainly be 'trouble.' The Government have warned him that if he goes to Poverty Bay, they will not be responsible for his safety." A third paragraph from Wellington reads: —"Either Sir Julius Vogel or Mr. Ballance will bring down a measure nest session extending the franchise to women for the return of members to Parliament."
