NATIONAL DEFENCE

Sir, —I note in the Herald of February 13 that "Layman" suggests 100 fast motor-vessels for defence purposes. In a cablegram message recently 1 read a quotation from a despatch from Madrid which concluded with: "The chief weapons of the Spanish conflict, and probably of any future war, are machine guns and rifles.'' New Zealand sent overseas in the Great War about 100,000 men. Probably twice that number in addition were fit for home defence service. If New Zealand had machine guns and rifles to give to these 300,000 defenders I think prospective invaders would hesitate, and the feeling of insecurity which exists in some quarters in New Zealand would be much relieved. Rifleman.
