SMALL BOY'S DEATH

DROWNING AT MERCER BROTHER'S EFFORTS IN VAIN [by telegraph—own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Tuesday A verdict of accidental drowning was returned by tho coroner, Mr. C. A. Lawrie, at an inquest to-day into the doath at Mercer last evening of Douglas TcfczlalT, aged six, son of Mr. and Mrs. Balfour Tet/Jaff. Evidence was given that deceased and his brother Mervyn were fishing on the Rooso Shipping Company's wharf on the Avcstcru side of the river. When Mervyn caught a fish his brother, turning to run to toll his parents, tripped and fell into tho water, which was about 10ft. deep. Mervyn called for help, but receiving no reply, took a rowing boat in an attempt to rescue his brother, who had disappeared. Tho body was recovered by dragging, and artificial respiration was tried without success.
