NELSON WINNERS
ALL TIMES IMPROVED
SOME ATTRACTIVE NOVICES
SEVERAL FOR HUTT PARK
BY ABAY.DOS
That tho Richmond raco track is one of the fastest country courses for trotting was demonstrated at the Nelson meeting, when placed horses in every raco showed substantial time improvements. In winning the Wakefield Handicap off 3.43 Northern Guy recorded 3.27. while Tarn, who was second, went 3.27 1-5 off the same line. This made tho latter ! s prospects off 3.5 in the Murchison Handicap look good and he succeeded, registering 2.51 3-5. Like most of the other Nelson winners, Taru is engaged at the Wellington meeting. The three-year-old trotter Gerfalcon won tho Brightwater Handicap in 3.38 from 3.-19, and, as he was not extended, could have gone a good deal f.ister, as ho proved yesterday when ho cut 18 seconds off his new mark and won easily. Tho brother to Bittersweet should have prospects at Hutt Park, as he will benefit by his three races. When Dollar Maid ran second to Ger- j falcon it paved the way for success in tho Foxhill Trot in 4.53 2-5 from 5.3. The Great Bingcn mare won very easily in spite of a few lapses, which cost her chief place in the Tasman Handicap, although she went 4.48. Vinco was the star performer in the improvers' class on Saturday, winning the Motueka Handicap in 3.31 4-5 off 3.40, but he was never at top speed. Mr. G. Paul considered 24 yards j sufficient penalty for the £7O collected Ibv Vinco when the Stoko Handicap j came up for decision, and again the i ! brother to Manoeuvre showed his I superiority with a good victory in 2.50 2-5. Vinco, who is only a young horse with little experience, will add interest to the Hutt Handicap. Tho Trotting Club Handicap wipner Red Flush, a sturdy son of Jack Potts and Crimson Rose, was responsible for an attractive effort in going 4.32 3-5 from a 4.48 line. The manner in which he finished indicated that he is a fine stayer. There is no doubt about his genuineness, yet a series of other factors sent him out an outsider for his record-breaking mission in the President's Handicap, i Eastern Prince, by Great Bingen from a Harold Dillon mare, was responsible for a smart effort, going 2.49 3-5 from . 2.57, but he did not begin as well in the Farewell Handicap and he could only finish fifth. He should be a better horse at Hutt Park. First Aid, winner of the Appleby ; Handicap, has only recently joined J. | Flanagan's stable. i ' Ropata, the handsome three-year- ! old by David McElwyn, raced below I expectations. He looked robust and | may have had an easy time since | running third in the Great Northern | Derby. He should derive benefit from the racing. j Winnie Parrish, who attracted attention when she won a double at the last meeting and created a good impression when she won at the Auckland summer fixture, is likely to make her 1 next appearance at Hutt Park, where ! she should have good prospects of add- ' ing to her list of successes.
