TOBACCO GROWING
Sir. —Mr. H. R. Russell's timely note of warning on the above subject should not go unheeded. Tobacco is a plant which will grow in any sub-tropical climate and in any soil, but it is most susceptible to conditions, principally soil and climate. It must ripen on the stalk in 80 to 100 days to enable it to be cured to the satisfaction of the manufacturers. Mr. Willis will find that 110 amount of experiment will produce a tobacco grown on clav land satisfactory to the manufacturers. 1 do not wish to discourage any enterprise in Mr. Willis or anybody else, but, on behalf of the Motueka growers, J hope you will sound another word of warning. The export of tobacco is in. its infancy; to establish it firmly it is necessary to export only the best quality leaf, such as the manufacturers require. This is well recognised by the Motueka growers. L sincerely hope that the export market to England will be jealouslv guarded and that there will be nothing exported to England but what comes up to the standard and quality required by the manufacturers. Ngaruawiihia. V. S. Jackson.
