AMALGAMATION QUESTION

GOVERNMENT'S INTENTIONS FARMERS EXPRESS FEARS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] TE KUITI, Saturday The fear that the Government would go further with amalgamation of local bodies than would be beneficial to farmers was expressed at the first meeting of the newly-formed Te Kuiti branch of- the Farmers' Union. A suggested remit that the branch support the Government in amalgamation of local bodies, and also in nationalisation of electricity, was left in abeyance. When this remit was mooted. Mr. H. Gould said a lot of ratepayers' money went into administration, but it was difficult to know the effects of amalgamation.

Mr. 11. Farrer said it would apparently put many people out of work. Mr. J. F. lloberts suggested that this question be left in abeyance. Any move for amalgamation should be made cautiously. He was quite sure that it was coming in the near future, and farmers would probably find that, in the long run, amalgamation would be to their detriment. It was not very long since the Farmers' Union asked for a commission to consider amalgamation of local bodies, but this Government seemed to be likely to go beyond what was then intended. No action was taken.
