DIAMOND WEDDING
EAST COAST RESIDENTS PIONEERING DAYS RECALLED [BV TF.LEGKAFH —OWN CO R TIES PON OKN T'J GISBORNE, Thursday Two old residents of the Patutahi district, Mr. and Mrs. J. Hills, yesterday celebrated the 60th anniversary of their wedding. Mr. Hills, who is now 87, was born in Kent, England, and came to New Zealand in 18/4. Mrs. Hills was born in ljettorcagh, near Dungloo, Donegal, Ireland, 81. years ago and came to New Zealand two years later, landing nt Auckland on November 0, 1876, and later coming to Gisborne.
After their marriage in Gisborne in the same year, Mr. and Mrs. Hills lived at Waerengnahika for 12 months and then moved to the Patuahi district. Later they took up a section of land in the same district, and until the last few years have been larming Lhcir land. Thev were the first white settlors in the district, and many stirring tales of tho old pioneering days are told by both Mr. and Mrs. Hills, who are still hale and hearty and enjoy the best of liealtfy.
