LARGE QUARTERLY RETURNS 963,000 TONS IN HAND (Received January 14, 6.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, Jan. 13 Lloyd's Register of shipbuilding returns for the last quarter of 1936 show that in British yards 963,642 tons of mercantile shipping were under construction at the end of the year. The figure is exclusive of certain contracts placed in December, which will briug the total to 1,000,000 tons. The official total of 963,642 tons exceeds by 220,556 tons, or 30 per cent, the tonnage which was being built n year ago, and is tho highest quarterly total recorded since September, 1930. Of the world's total of 2,251,221 tons now in hand, the British yards will contribute 42.8 per cent.
