PRESERVATION OF BUSH

NAPIER-TAUPO HIGHWAY REQUEST MADE TO MINISTI-R [bt telegbapb OWN ooreespoxdkjt] HASTINGS, Thursday A plea for the preservation of 165 acres of native bush at the summit of Turangakumu, on the Napier-Taupo main highway, was made by the Napier Chamber of Commerce recently to t;he Minister of Lands, the Hon. F. Langstone. A reply has now been received from the Minister. "If it were possible I would buy every acre of land I could to preserve the common heritage of the peoplt 1 , states the Minister. "We have #sicceedocl in getting £12,000 set aside J:or public reserves and parks, but ihe trouble is that this money does not go very far. There are 775 public domans in New Zealand, not counting thi»so under the control of local bodies, over 800 reserves, and eight big national parks, with thousands of acres, so tlat £12,000 does not go very far toward maintaining all these, let alone P" r ' chasing new land for reserves. In any case, I think local bodies shoud respond. However, when 1 get back to Wellington I will see if there is anything left in the kitty, and if there in 1 will see what can be done."
