FIFTY YEARS AGO

THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS Tho advancement of the government, of the Hawaiian Islands is recounted in the following article from the New Zealand Herald of January 15, 1887: — "The Government of the Hawaiian Islands seems determined to take a leading position in the Pacific. It is saidin Honolulu that several of the native rulers in the Pacific have petitioned King Kalakau to be taken under his protection, but not having the means of supporting such a protectorate, the Hawaiian Ministry has deferred entertaining any of the proposals. \Ve now hear from a leading politician in Honolulu that the Government is anxious to consolidate the various Governments of the Pacific Islands, and as a means to this end has intructed its London agents to have built at the earliest moment an armed cruiser of moderate size, but containing all the most modern appliances. The Hawaiian loan, which was lately placed on the London market, having been taken up so readily, has raised the status of the inhabitants of these islands so much that in their own estimation they now feel equal to controlling the various groups of islands in the Great Pacific Ocean."
