EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
RECONSTRUCTION URGED AUSTRALIAN PARENTS' BODY In discussinjj; the present educational system of Australia, which she described as faulty, Mrs. Rita Murdoch, who is a member of the Victorian Federation of Mothers' Clubs and is at present visiting Auckland, said many of the mothers of school children were endeavouring to unite and bring their influence to bear upon the situation. She considered that the examination methods should be reconstructed and that the reconstruction should be in the hands of tho parents. Often the failure of a child at examinations instilled a sense of inferiority which was a danger to his future character and life. r J he Mothers' Clubs were auxiliaries for the schools and were voluntary bodies working both for the progress of education, the school and the children, Mrs. Murdoch continued. In her opinion, schools should be staffed on the net attendance instead of on the average attendance. As it was at present, the position was a danger to the health of the teacher and meant also that the child ren were not receiving the necessary attention.
With the appointment of more teachers and the reduction of large (■lasses into smaller ones, cramming and excessive studying to pass examinations would become unnecessary.
