PUBLIC SERVICE POSTS

RETIREMENT OF OFFICERS EFFECTIVE AFTER 40 YEARS [BY TEL KG U ATH OWN CO 1! RESPONDENT] \\ KLLIN'GTOX, Tuesday A statement that retirement from the Public Service after 40 years' work, as recently announced, in connection with the post office, was the general decision of the Government covering all departments, was made to-day by the Prime .Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage. ''There must be exceptions where it is difficult immediately to till responsible administrative positions," he added. "We have to use common sense under such conditions, but in general our retirement policy is being carried out " Inquiries show that the Government's decision causes the greatest number of retirements in the post office, as other sections of the Public Service have been steadily retiring officers alter 40 years or on reaching the age of 60. It is not, therefore, anticipated that a large number will be affected by the enforcement of the retirement regulation.
