EVENTFUL CONTEST ONE WIN FOR CHRISTCHURCH AUCKLAND'S POOR SHOWING [liY TELEGRAPH' —OWN CORRESPONDENT] TAUKANGA, Tuesday The second race in Ihe Coruwcll ("up scries took place this morning in heavy rain, over a course of about six miles. An eventful contest resulted in a win for the C'hristchurch boat. Auckland and C'hristchurch have now won one race each. Just before the start at 10..'35 a.m. the Lyttelton boat met with a mishap to its gatf and only nine boats competed. From a wonderful start Auckland was first across the lino from C'hristchurch, Tauranga, Manukau ami Plimmerton, with the rest iu a bunch a length astern. At the railway wharf Wellington and a few others went about unnecessarily and lost ground. At the cemetery C'hristchurch weathered Plimmerton and Tauranga and Manukau headed Auckland. C'hristchurch obtained a lead of about 40 yards from Plimmerton, and Auckland commenced to work the eastern shore. Off the end of the point Plimmerton moved up and just weathered the Christchnrch boat, which struck tho mud and Tauranga slipped into second place. Position of Auckland Manukau began to move up to Christchurch. At this stage it appeared that Auckland had made an error in crossing the harbour and the boat seemed well astern. Tho positions remained unchanged on the long leg across tho harbour, with Plimmerton opening out a gap from Tauranga. Christchnrch was now dropping back and Manukau and Whangarci were moving forward. Wellington, Hamilton and Paramata were trailing astern and Auckland's position was doubtful. Opposite the leaning beacon the three leaders stood across the channel too far and overlaid the mark, allowing the rest to close up the gap. Auckland was now well astern. At the leeward mark the order was: Plimmerton, Manukau, Tauranga, C'hristchurch. Whangarei, Wellington, Hamilton,- Paremata, Auckland. Plimmerton's halyard broke as the boat was in a commanding position and Tauranga went into the lead. Christchurch headed Manukau. Auckland was still well back. Tauranga and Christchnrch now drew away. Series of Mishaps

At the black buoy the order was: Tauranga, Christchurch, Manukau, Whangarci, Hamilton, Wellington, Paromata and Auckland. Shortly after sotting its spinnaker for the lead to the finish Tauranga capsized. The leading boats seemed to be striking all the bad luck. The Tanranga boys made three unsuccessful efforts to right their boat. Christchurch, with" a fairly safe lead from Manukau, took ofl its spinnaker. Mtuiukau, in an effort to catch up, lost its spinnaker and, while trying to recover it. broke the mast. This allowed Christchurch about a 10-minuto lead from Whangarci and Hamilton, with Wellington and Pareniata following and Auckland well back last. On the way to the finish Hamilton passed Whangarci. Pareniata was flying toward the finish, but halfway down capsized. The race ended: —Christchurch, ]Hi 59 m u2s; Hamilton, 12h 7m ss; "Whangarci, 12h 8m 10s; Wellington, 12h 9m -IBs; Auckland, 12h 14m 275.

Owing to the mishaps to the competing boats tho third race was not held to-day.
