PLAY INTERRUPTED BY RAIN CANTERBURY TEAM'S WIN [BY TELECRAFH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] • CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Incessant heavy rain made play impossible in tho Plunket Shield match between Canterbury and "Wellington today. Canterbury therefore won 011 tho first innings. Both matches played at Christchurch this summer have been interfered with by rain. In the first rain gave Canterbury a lucky first-innings win over Auckland, and in the second Canterbury was deprived of a chance of forcing an outright win against Wellington. The scorers in the latter game at the end of yesterday's play were: — WELLINGTON First innings . . . 18-'3 Second innings, three wickets for 191 CANTERBURY First innings, six wickets (dec.) for 430
POSITIONS OF TEAMS AUCKLAND IX THE LEAD Each of tho four provinces has now played two matches. Canterbury has won both on tho first innings, but it is behind Auckland on points as the latter has an outright win and a loss on the first innings to its credit. Auckland .. 2 1 Canterbury .2 Wellington .2 Otag-o 2 1 1 The system of scoring is as follows: — Outright win, 8 points; outright loss, 0; win on first innings, 4; loss on first innings, 2; tie on match, 4 each; no result after six hours' play. 4 each. In the event of a tie between two or more teams tho shield is awarded on averages. Auckland and Canterbury have each held the Flunket Shield nine times. Wellington has held the trophy eight times and Otago twice. Canterbury has yet to play Otago at Dunedin. while Auckland will meet Wellington at Auckland.
