MAORI CARVINGS

WORK AT OHINEMUTU SLABS FOR MEETING-HOUSE [by tklkcraph —OWN conn'KSPONDENr] ROTOR UA, Tuesday Carvers at the school of Maori arts and crafts at Ohinomutu are at present on the last of the heavy pou pou slabs for the Wairoa, Hawko's Bay, meeting-house. The work was commenced about 12 months ago, and since then 20 slabs have been carved and forwarded to Wairoa. Although the work at Ohinomutu is now Hearing completion there are still a considerable number of smaller slabs to be carved. This work will be done on the site at Wairoa by Mr. Pone Taiapa and other carvers from the Ohinomutu School. When the of the Wairoa carvings is completed at Ohinomutu. carvings for another meet-ing-house of Ngati Porou, some miles from Gisborne, will be commenced. The totara slabs for the carvings have nlreadv been received in Rotorua.
