LATE KING GEORGE THE MEMORIAL FUND SCHEME TO SWELL TOTAL (Received January 4, fi.s p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, Jan. ft The King George V. National Memorial Fund now amounts to £.'581,895. During Memorial Week, from January 14 to 20, the Lord Mayor will make an appeal to people with bank accounts to sign over to the fund the odd shillings and pence standing to their credit at a given date. It is suggested that these odd shillings and pence in hanking accounts over the whole country probably will aggregate about £10,000,000. The "shillings and pence" campaign, designed to raise the King George V. Memorial Fund for the provision of playing-fields throughout the country to the neighbourhood of £750,000, was announced by the Lord Mayor of London Sir George Broadbridge, in a broadcast address on November 13. The campaign wjll be undertaken between January 13 and January 20, the anniversary of King George's death. Even-one with a banking account will be invited to authorise the deduction of the odd shillings and pence from his or her credit balance on a specified day, for the benefit of the fund. Thus a subscription cannot exceed 19s lid; it may be one penny only. The Lord Mayor explained that there were more than 14,000,000 separate accounts in the Joint Stock Banks, and still more personal accounts with provident, savings, building and other societies.
