COALMINE DISPUTE
POSITION AT HIKURANGI QUESTION OF RESUMPTION [BT telegraph—own coebesponbext] "WHAXGAREI, Monday Indications are that the 16 men on contract work at the Hikurangi Coal Company's mine at Hikurangi will not recommence work to-morrow. They ceased work a day before the Christmas holidays were due to begin, following a dispute with the management concerning moneys which they claimed as back pay. It was hoped that a settlement would be reached in the past few days, but, although no official statement is available, it is not likely that work will be resumed tomorrow. It is expected that a decision in the dispute will be made this week. The mine has not been producing coal for many months, the 16 men having been employed in the construction of two new drives. Their efforts have resulted in coal being located, but it is considered in authoritative quarters that any serious labour trouble will cause the operations to be indefinitely suspended.
