CHANCES LOST
SOME EABLY REVERSES WAIKATO PLAYER IN FORM EASY WINNER OF SECTION [BY TKLKGHAPTf —SPECIAL IIKPORTKu] WELLINGTON", Monday The greens wero rather stiff at the commencement, but improved as play progressed. There were several surprise defeats in the early rounds. McWhannell and Wcllings, both of Hataitai, lost their chances early. Benefield (St. John's), rinks ex-champion and run-ner-up in the event last year, Gagliardi (Edgcware), and T. Edwards (Temuka) suffered similar fate, while Livingstone lost his second game at the Mutt, and Bremnerwent down heavily to Marris, of Kelburn, 22—5. One of the features of to-dav's play was the progress of Evans, the Waikato representative, who went very well in his first two games, recording rather easy w ins, in which ho gave a good display. He then went on to account for his next two opponents, while in his fifth game he met Brackenridge, the Lyall Bay and Wellington champion. This game commanded a big following as these two had an unbeaten record to this stage. Evans never looked like being beaten and he is section-winner at tho headquarters green with five wins. At Xewtown no fewer than nine ties wore recorded of three wins each. Gamble, Hamilton, went away well against a solid player in Dr. Austin, Cromwell, and threw the jack on 14 out of the 21 heads. His win was convincing. Against Rickctts, Island Bay, Gamble dominated play, having 15 on the card before his opponent scored a single. His board had four fours in the margin of 27 points to liis credit. In w inning vein he accounted for Perry, Thorndon, and Skoglund, Wellington, in his next two games. These were good wins, and his loss in the last does not stop him from qualifying. Keys Qualifies Keys, Auckland, playing Skoglund, Wellington, one of the members of a well-known Stratford family, won by only three points, but his play was well up to standard. He then lost to J. 11. Smith, El wood, but still qualifies. The Xapier player, Engebretsen, lowered the Hamilton representative's colours at Petone, Bell not picking the green as early as his opponent. Engebretscn was always a point or so ahead to notch a win by a small margin. Bell made amends by attending to Berry, Kiatoa, in the next game, 15 —13, while Engebretsen had an easy win from Gauntlet, Lyall Bay, 30—10. The Xapier representative is playing nice bowls and only suffered defeat in the last game at the hands of Pollock. Ricearion Racecourse, and he qualifies. Macklow, Onehunga, made no mistakes in accounting for Wyatt, Karori, in his first game at Island Bay. He had three possibles on his card. Rudge, Haw era. was a victim in the second round, 24—18. in which the winner was never troubled. Macklow went down in his fourth game to Duff. Wellington, and then won again over T. Burgess, Riccarton Racecourse, to enable him to qualifv. Walker, Auckland, had a few points on O'Donnell, Wellington, in their game at Hataitai and the winner always seemed safe. A Xelson player, White, was his second victim, while was no trouble to him, although he was on his own green. Sutton, Hawera, proved to bo Walker's downfall by six points, but with four wins the Aucklandcr qualifies. Past Champion in Form At Thorndon, Carswell. Taieri, had a margin of 11 points on Bockett, Auckland. and tho past champion was performing quite up to his best and, with a stiff green, his effort was a good one. The loser made amends by accounting for Wcllings, Hataitai, in the next game, 20 —13. This was a good effort as tho Wellington man was playing well. Bockett's effort against such a good performer as E. J. Hill, taking a six-point win from the ex-Wellington Club man, was well received. His last win against Bull, Hawera, assures him qualifying, his only loss being to the Taieri veteran. ' Maccy, Remuera, did very well, only losing to Condor, Lyall Bay, a strong player and he also qualifies. At Seatoun Hardlev, West End, had a very close, tussle with Feilding, Hataitai, and the game was won on the last bowl, the winner playing a beautiful draw shot. ' Going on the Aucklandcr accounted rather easily for Yeoman, Hamilton, but lost a life to Spearman, Sydenham. He appeared to be qualifying when Wight, St. John's, .settled his aspirations in the last contest. lire's play at tho seaside green was very fine, his first two wins being well executed. The Auckland Club s representative was finding the grass to his liking, but the afternoon saw his touch astray and with three wins and two losses he fails to go forward. Robertson Wins Easily Robertson, Onehunga, disposed of Andreason, Port Ahuriri. in no uncertain fashion by carding 28 —9 against his opponent. The winner hold the mat at one stage for no fewer than ten heads and he had three fours and four threes. Although only two points formed tho difference in his second try _ho seemed always a safe winner against Ewing, Stratford. Lloyd, Caledonian, then recorded a sound trouncing of 20—6 in the third gamo in which the Onehunga man was never in tho picture. With four wins Robertson plays in the next round.
Mingiu# ill so qualifies. 'live Epsom player is carded as a Ponsonby raomber on this occasion. His play was very sound all day at Hutt. The present holder, Livingstone, struck form early and accounted for Goodwin, Upper Hutt, rather easily, hut he met his Waterloo when Jack, St. John's, defeated him, 10—11. This loss was not generally expected. Three rather easy Avins then came his way and with four and one Livingstone is still to lie reckoned with. Hamilton has another good representative in Pomeroy, who at Wolmrn played very well to obtain four wins. ]li> goes on in the next round. Oarswell and Foster, the best of the old champions, are unbeaten and Walker and Livingstone, with four wins and one loss, comprise the list of old champions still in competition. R. Hnworth, pairs aitd rinks winner last year, is also unbeaten. Dearo, of Carlton, played- well at Porirua, where ho found the green very tricky, and both he and lhemner, West End, qualify with one loss each.
