HITLER'S CAMPAIGN SUPPORT OF CATHOLICS IMPORTANT CONDITIONS By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received Jnnuary 3, 7.'_'o p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 2 A message from Berlin states that a pastoral signed by six Catholic archbishops and 17 bishops will be read to-morrow throughout Germany. It contains an offer to cooperate with Hcrr Hitler against Bolshevism on condition that religious persecution ceases and the Church is permitted to enjoy the freedom accorded in the concordat with (he Vatican, especially in regard to the education of children by Catholics. The pastoral condemns the attempt to root out Christianity in favour of the German faith movement, and general blasphemies and abuse of the Church, which do not aid the Fuehrer in his work of reconstruction, hut dishonour the name of Germany. The Munich correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says the first intimation that Catholics are joining Herr Hitler's anti-Bolshevik campaign was given bv Cardinal Faulhaber. In preaching a New Year's Eve sermon in a packed cathedral, ho announced that a pastoral would be read against Communism in all pulpits on Sunday. The preacher denounced as an equally grave danger to German unity the attempt to undermine Christianity which must he resisted with the same strength as Bolshevism.
DEFIANT PASTORS NAZIISM CHALLENGED NEW YEAR MANIFESTO BERLIN, Jan. 1 Confessional opposition pastors opened the new year by fearlessly challenging Nazi ism and reading from their pulpits a united manifesto denouncing interference in the training of Protestant clergy. They declared that the fight against Christ and His Church is intensifying and is being systematically organised by leading figures in public life. The manifesto appeals to parishioners not to be intimidated.
COMMUNIST'S FATE PERPETUAL DETENTION LONDON, Jan. 1 The Berlin correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says he understands that "detention in perpetuity" is the fate of the Communist leader, Herr Thaelmann, who has resisted attempts to convert him to Naziism during his imprisonment. Herr Tergler, who was acquitted on a charge of being concerned in causing the Reichstag fire, has been released, having given an undertaking to renounce Communism.
