INSTITUTE AFFAIRS
Katikati.—A flower show was held recently, the prize-winners being Mesdames Moulden, Windle, Johnston, Henry, Ross, Hopkin, Coleman, and Misses Hill and Burbridge. The competition for the best decorated sponge cake was by Mrs. Tanner. Mrs. Hazard, of Waihi, gave a lecture on fancy woik and exhibited two handworked shawls. Health stamps were sold and arrangements made for a bring-and-buy stall to further help the health stamp campaign. Papamoa. The president, Mrs. Teague, presided at the December meeting. Songs were rendered by Mrs. Kelly, and a debate was held on "Summer Sports versus Winter." Points competitions were for a bowl of flowers and for the best collection of vegetables. The sewing circle leader received a parcel of clothing for needy cases. Miss N. Laurent was the winner of the Christmas cake. Hairini, Welcome Bay.—The December meeting was well attended, Mrs. Dickinson presiding. A demonstration of the making of wood fibre flowers was given by Mrs. Adkins, of Khandallah. A comjietition for a tapestry article was won by Mrs. Dickinson, with Mrs. Bidder second. One for a calendula radio was won by Mrs. Peck, with Mrs. Talbot second. Mrs. Koam and Miss H. were hostesses.
Paengaroa.—Mrs. Mailman presided at the last meeting. A paper on "Persia" was read by Mrs. D. Steel. The roll call for summer drinks was well responded to. A competition for peeling a potato blindfolded was won by Mrs. C. Vercoe. Xaike.— A competition for the best Christmas cake, without any decoration, was won bv Mrs. Griffin. A demonstration of icing a Christmas cake and also different ways of using the pieces of., an icing set, was given by Mrs. Frangos. Brisk business was done at the mystery parcels sales table. The hostesses were Mrs. Mudgwav and Mrs. Harris. "
Mount Maunganui.—The December meeting- was held in the parish hall, Mrs. .McCardle presiding. Mrs. Adkins and Miss Keam, of Hairini, Welcome demonstrated tbe making of flowers from wood fibre. The roll call for soft toys for the Christmas tree brought/ in a number of gifts. In the competitions Mrs. Kiddie was first with the best peggy squares, with Lady Armstrong and Mrs. Morgan second, and for the best beach frock costing not more than 10s Mrs. Best was first. In the monthly shell competition Mrs. Jironberg was first. Mrs. McCardle also Sained first place for an iced cake. Mesdames Pethcriek and Kronberg were hostesses. Waiuku.—The institute's December meeting took the form of a Christmas Party held in the public hall. Many °f the members were in fancv costume and all wore fancy head-dresses. Folk dances, original rhvming, a roll call, and "Holy \ig|,t,' ; suny; in harmony y the junior circle members, comprised the programme. Mrs. Waugh, Mrs. 'nes and Miss Zona Findlay were the accompanists. Afternoon tea was served y the members of the committee, p C n comprised Mesdamcs Madill, amphell, Hefounder, Muir, S.
