WORKING YEAR BEGINS
I The holidays have ended for most. 1 people, and this morning they i address themselves to the duties of j the new year. Many there are. I doubtless, who, having had their ; recreation and rest interrupted by j wet weather, have felt that the J holidays ended early last week, but, i with a week-end of two perfect days j in which to get rid of the stains of travel, the discomfort? are now being posted to the profit and loss account and a calm philosophy of life is asserting itself. Trying experiences often gain some merit in retrospect. The weather notwithstanding, the holidays have seen an extraordinary amount of traffic, which means that more than the average number of people have had change of scene and air and diversion sufficiently varied to enable them to shake off the shackles binding them to past difficulties and worries. The community has shared the benefits of a busy trading period, and the prospect is that the circulation of the increased amount of money will create more employment in the coming months. Combined with the stimulus brought about by the buoyant wool market, there is the certainty of abundant dairy production, the rains having ensured lush pastures at a time when the grass is sometimes burned up and a decline in the output of butter-fat begins. The huge increase in the turn-over of the totalisator, about which there are two opinions, is certainly a portent of confidence and, so long as that confidence is not too strongly buttressed by a belief in a magical economic wand in Wellington, it has its encouragement for trade. A considerable sum is still being paid as sustenance, however, and the public would appreciate early steps to transfer some of the idle labour it represents to the industries, notably the dairy industry, which can employ it. Considering all circumstances, both employers and ! employees can take up their tasks j this morning with good heart..
