BOWLING
CIIRISTMA S TOURN AM ENT INTER-SECTION PLAY BEGUN THREE TEAMS UNDEFEATED After a series of postponements occasioned by wet weather inter-section play in the Auckland . BoiVling Centre's annual Christmas tournament was begun on the Carlton greet) on Saturday when three rounds of 21 heads were played. At the end of the day's play the 20 teams which commenced were reduced to ten, three of these, Pilkington (Hamilton), Dyson (HallvburtonJohnstone) and Lundon (Devonport) being undefeated. The remaining seven, riiomas (Mount Albert), Benson (Balmoral), Keatley (Rocky Nook), Cross (Onehunga), Denison (Balmoral), MoMaster (Stanley), and de Launay (Carlton) are one-lifers. These teams will not meet again until January 29 (Anniversary Day), when it is proposed to complete three more rounds on the holiday and finalise the tournament in the afternoon of the following day, whicti is a Saturday. When play commenced the greens were rather dull and heavy, but they improved toward the completion of the round. For the second and third rounds the pace of the greens improved considerably, and the standard was of a more interesting character. However, the day's play did not reveal those bright passages which have been characteristic of former events at this stage of the season. The conditions, of course, did not lend themselves toward anything in this direction. Feature of- Round The most remarkable feature of the opening round was the success of the two Ponsonby teams, skipped by Parsons and Somerville. Both were in a parlous plight on the last head, yet they won. Parsons required four to win and had to draw two shots himself to do it. Somerville's task was easier, as he secured the necessary five points to win by the aid of good team-work and the failure of the opposition to save the position. The contest between those two stalwarts, de Launay and Keatley, was a close one all the way. The scores were equal with Ihree heads to play, hut the Carlton team was steadier over the concluding stages and it won by a four-point margin. The Hamilton club team had three good wins on the day, two of its victims being Parsons and McMaster. The Stanley team was much below form in the third round and allowed Pilkington a good lead in the early stages of the game.
The other two undefeated teams D.vson (Hallyburton-Johnstone) and Lundon (Devonport), skipped respectively by Bromley and Hessey, both played sound bowls. The former's win over de Launay was particularly meritorious.
The outstanding shot of the day was that of the Mount Albert skip, R. Thomas, an effort on the, last head of the third round game with Jenkin's Carlton team, when the scores were even and Carlton held a very nice position as the skips changed over. He failed with his first bowl, but drew the shot dead with the second and so preserved his team for the next round. The jack was near the ditch and Carlton had two bowls inches away only, so Thomas fully deserved the applause which greeted his performance. Cross and his Onehunga team-mates were responsible for eliminating Parsons in the third round. The Onehunga players set up a very strong attack, which the Ponsonby team just failed to withstand.
