CHILDREN AND WAR
RECENT TEST MADE READY TO SERVE EMPIRE [from a special correspondent] LONDON, Dec. 12 The reactions of children to official || films of the Great War were recently || tested in an English town where muni- 1 tions are made. The results were curious. The children laughed at blinded, wounded men, limping back from the | Battle of the Somme, and they cheered airmen, generals and battleships, as well as soldiers going over the top. A questionnaire, however, revealed a very .different attitude. The question, A\hat do you think of war?" brought ono favourable reply, one in*, definite and 381 against. In reply to the question.. "What do you think ought to be done?" 123 children suggested disarmament or control of arms, 122 approved i of the League of Nations, 85 wanted arbitration, 54 suggested "keeping the peace" and only three urged war. "If England went to war with another country, what would you do if you were grown up?" was another question. To this 309 said they would serve England—2G6 unconditionally, 16 "if conscripted," 17 ".if cause just" and 10 as non-combatants. Thirtytwo declared that they would not serve, 12 of them on conscientious grounds.
