r HOGMANAY CELEBRATED The festive ceremonies connected with tie Scottish celebration of hogmanay, were faithfully observed by a large gathering of members of the Onehunga Caledonian Society in the Orphans' Hall Ondhunga, on Thursday night. At the hour of midnight, all lights were extinguished, symbolic of the dying moments of. the old rear. They were relighted when 1937 was hailed by the chief, Mr. J. H. Preston, who, led by little Miss Heather Stewart, representing in appropriate attire, the New Year, was ceremoniously piped in by the society's piper, Mr. J. Cowper, lhe earlier portion of the programme .was devoted to music and dancing, when Airs. J. Wiltshire, of Wellington, was •heard in "Angus Macdonald" and "My Am Folk.'' Observation of the custom known as ladies' qhoice," in which the privilege of choosing thpir own dancing partners extended to women, was the cause of Much merriment. The hall was tastefully decorated and supper was served by the ladies' auxiliary committee. Mrs. W. •Howieson and Mrs. G. Montgomery were hostesses and Mrs. E. Henley provided "the music.
