BIRTHS INCREASE
HIGHER DEATH BATE AUCKLAND STATISTICS RETURNS FOR PAST YEAR A marked increase in the number of births is a feature of the vital statistics for Auckland in 1936, compared with ! the returns for the previous year. The number of deaths lias increased proportionally, however 3 while there lias been a substantial increase in marriages, particularly in those performed at the registry office. In 1936 there were 2636 births, compared with 2424 the previous year. There were 2069 deaths, as against 1874, and 2718 marriages, compared with 2349. Included in the marriage figures for last year were 558 performed at the registry office. In 1935 there were 441. From 1926, when there were 3582 births in Auckland, the number fell fairly rapidly year by year until 1932, when there were 2435. In 1933 there were 24.44, and it appeared that the de-! eline had been arrested, but successive j decreases have been shown in 1934 and | 1935. The 1936 figures are better than | any since 1931, when the total was i 2794. The largest total of deaths was in October, when there were 212, and January provided the smallest number, 122. December, with 305, was the most popular month for marriages, while July, with 162, was the least favoured.
