HASTINGS TRACK WORK SIR NIGEL AND CAY HUNTER [by telegraph OWN correspondent] HASTINGS, Wednesday The final gallops for the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's New Year meeting on Friday and Saturday did not throw a great deal of light on the chances of the candidates.
Royal Minstrel was not doing his best to run six furlongs in 1.19. He should go very close to winning a race on the Wairarapa trip.
Black Frost and Gasman made an easy task of galloping five furlongs in 1.4 2-5, running the first quarter in 245. Girontle, a full-brother to Ben Braggie, covered half a mile in 50s, and he should be an early winner. Fossicker and Perfect Lady took 51s. Taupiri 525, anrl Wananga 545, easily. Master Cyklon, from the time point of view, impressed by getting to the end of a round in 1.40 2-5, but he carried a very light weight. Sir Nigel showed promise of coming back to form by getting over six furlongs in 1.16 2-5.
Quimper nnd Mary Rose took 51s for four furlongs on the course proper. Roval Solo dashed over a quarter in 24 3-ss. Mohua covered five furlongs in 1.5, Allmetic taking 1.5 2-5, and First Chapter, 1.5 2-5. Cletrac impressed by running half a mile in 50s. Maine was going easily to take 1.22 for six furlongs, and Only One covered three furlongs in 395. Skyway and Silver River were Avell clear of Unexpected at the end of six furlongs in 1.21. Skyway has improved. Trailer, going with the novice King's Rulo, covered five furlongs in 1.5 2-5. Gay Hunter pleased by striding over six furlongs in 1.16 2-5, and on Friday he should go very close to winning.
TAUKERENIKAU RUNNERS HORSES FROM HAWKE'S BAY [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] HASTINGS, Wednesday Royal Minstrel, Sansfoy and Lacquer left Hastings this afternoon for the, Wairarapa, but Gascon Chief was not taken. Gasman and Black Frost are also remaining here for the Hnwke's Bay races. Tiger Gain, who accepted both for the Marton and the Wairarapa Cups, is starting in the latter event, when he should mako amends for his defeat at Awapuni. Padishah is not fulfiling his Marton Cup engagement, he having been brought homo after the Manawatu meeting to bo turned out for two months.
