YESTERDAY'S GAMES DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP POSITIONS OF THE PLAYERS The New Zealand chess championship was continued yesterday with the playing of all adjourned games, which resulted as follows: —Second round: Anderson drew with Newick. Ihird round. Scverno drew with McNab, Abbott defeated Jones, Hindin drew with Scott. Details of play in the fifth round of the championship and a subsidiary tournament, the premier reserve contest, aro as follows: CHAMPIONSHIP Abbott v. McNab (Q.P.).— An even game the opening stages, after which Abbott had two knights and four pawns against knight, bishop and two pawns and McNab resigned. Hunter v. Scverno (English).—An even game to adjournment with material even. Newick v. Jones (Vienna). —Jones was left with a bishop and four pawns against bishop and three pawns, tho bishops being of opposite colours. The winner played a difficult ending and won at inovo 59. Kelling v. Lynch (Centre Game). — At move 8, queens were exchanged and an even game continued to adjournment with material even. Burry v. Erskine (Sicilian). —The outstanding contest of the day. Burry gave up his queen for rook and knight and forced a position where he either mated his opponent or emerged a rook better off. Erskine resigned at the 18th move as his position was then hopeless. Hindin v. Anderson (K.P.). —Hindin gained advantage in the middle game, which led to his winning exchange at move 29 and Anderson resigned at move 40. Scott v. Beyer (Colle). —An even middle game. Scott gained a slight position advantage in tho end game, but not enough to win and a draw was agreed upon.
