PUPILS' EXPENSES

SCHOOL AT PUKEKOHE PAYMENT OF SUBSIDY [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHK, Wednesday A cheque for £lOl was received today from the Education Department by the principal of the l'ukekohe Technical High School, Mr. \Y. K. J. Munro, to pay bus subsidies and boarding allowances for children whose homes are at a distance from the school. The subsidies were authorised as from the beginning of the third term this year and, as about 50 pupils will benefit, the average payment will be about £2. The bus subsidy is at the rate of 6d a return trip for children living over three miles from the school and 8d for over live miles. The boarding allowance is 5s a week, and pupil.? who have to board in l'ukekohe may also have a railway pass to enable them to return home at week-ends, the value of the pass, about 5s a month, being deducted from the allowance. The arrangement is a decided help to nine children ivhose homes in some cases are up to 20 miles distant from a railway station, and who have a journey by train of up to 12 miles to l'ukekohe.
