DEARER WOOLLEN GOODS
INCREASE NEXT MONTH LARGE FIRM'S DECISION [l3 V TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPON'DIWT] NEW PLYMOUTH. Monday A general' increase in tho price of woollen goods manufactured in New Zealand is expected early in tho new year. The reason given is tho substantial advance in the price of raw wool, added to tho increased labour costs, consequent upon recent legislation. One of the largest woollen manufacturing firms in the Dominion has notified retailers of an advance on woollen goods of ten per cent to dato from January. Other firms are expected to follow suit promptly. When tho labour legislation first took effect, manufacturers advanced prices provisionally by 12$ per cent, and agreed to feci their way. At least one firm has now decided that it must make tho additional increase of ten per cent to meet the added burden of costs. Prominent retailers expressed the opinion that, one effect of tho increase would be that choapor goods would bo preferred against thoso of higher quality, because some jieople would not be able to afford the better qualities. There was, however, always a large section willing to pay a higher price to secure better goods.
