MORE WOMEN NEEDED

Sir,—lt is truthfully said tnat immigration under unfavourable conditions swells the ranks of the unemployed, but where it can be definitely shown that an urgent need exists for more of a population then immigration is surely justifiable. The urgent need exists ill the Dominion for more women. '1 he surplus of males at present, exclusive of the native population, is some 27,000, and out of this total there must bea large proportion of empty homes, waiting for the womenfolk to fill them. It is obvious that no substantial gain in population is possible until this position is rectified. Factories are asking daily for female labour. More waitresses are required for hotels. Domestics are not to be had. Is not this sufficient evidence for the Government to launch a scheme of assisted passages trom hngland, where there is about 2.000,000 surplus women ? Emi-ty Cradle.
