BOXING DAY HOLIDAY With no motor-cars and buses in»cxistence and no tor railway excursions, ' pleasure steamers hau practically monopoly in catering the holiday-making public of Auckland on Boxing Day 50 years ago. In a comprehensive account of Boxing Bay activities, the Nkw Zkai.anu Hkkai.o ot December 28, 1886, describes steaincl trips to St. Heliers. Kawau, Vi aiwt'ra, Motutapu, Man-o'-War Hay, lania'ki. Motuihi, Mahurangi Heads, Devon peltTakapuna, Birkenhead and Onehunga Heads. . "The excursion to'Kawau proved t e greatest attraction of the day for t e s.s. Clansman went away crowded * 1 1 people," the report states.
