Mayson. the promising young Aucklander, reached the semifinals of the Canterbury men's singles in the annual lawn tennis- championship. In successive rounds he beat Xorman Sturt and A. D. Brown, both from Auckland, and now will play 11. A. Barnett. second ranking player in Canterbury, for the right to enter the final. The other semi-finalists are C. Angas, the defending champion, and D. C. Coombo, uf Wellington. ™ i In the ladies' singles semi-finals Miss Dulcie Xicholls, of Wellington iScw /ealan. cliamiiion, will meet Miss Dene loole, and Miss Tlielma I'oole will play Miss Margaret Beverley, of Waikato. With continued good weather the tournamcut in which practically all the competitors for the New Zealand championships are piaving, should be completed to-morrow. There were several surprises of less importance than those caused by Mayson. Small and slight, Mayson hit hard and accurately .on either hand, his volleys and smashes being deftly and effectively executed. Ho seldom made errors in his footwork.
