JOCKEYS HURT
FALL IN HURDLES RENNIE'S CASE SERIOUS MISHAP TO R. W. McTAVISH When his mount, Modern Maid, fell at the first fence in the Grafton Hurdles race during the Auckland facing Club's summer meeting at Filers] io on Saturday, her rider, W. Ronnie, suffered severe concussion and a lacerated scalp. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital in a St. John Ambulance and an X-ray examination was made. His condition was regarded as serious when he was admitted and it was unchanged late last night. Another jockey, It. W. McTavish, had one of his knees wrenched in the Railway Handicap when his mount, Tonnerre, came into contact with the course rail early in the race. After dismounting from Tonnerre at the finish of the race he had to lie carried into the jockeys' room, where it was found that his knee was injured. The jockey explained that Tonnerre had changed his stride and rolled into the rail and so no official inquiry was held. TIIE CROONER'S FAMILY GRANDSON OF SYMBOLISM The breeding of The Crooner, winner of the Nursery Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday, is more than usually interesting from the fact that liis dam. Syntballo, is a daughter of Symbolism, one of the only two mares by Symington In the New Zealand Stud Book* This is a line highly regarded in England. Symbolism produced, in addition to Symballo, Killasliandra and Cataiini, the last-named having produced Hunting Cat, among others of lessei note.
It is the other daughter of Symington. however, who has kept his line to the fore in the Dominion. This is the famous Simper, who established one of the most, valuable families in the country, her progeny including Kuoh noted performers as Gold Light, Ha/.7.1c Dazzle, Beacon Light and Sir bini per. NEW NUMBER CLOTHS PATTERN MUCH ADMIRED The new number cloths used at Ellerslie for the first time by the Auckland Racing Club on Saturday were much admired. Ihe seven-inch white numbers, in special paint, on a navy blue serge base, which was piped with gohl braid, were very effective and a great improvement upon the old cloths. The numbers were very easily distinguished and the club undoubtedly made a happy selection when it decided to use the new pattern.
