CUP PROSPECTS

TE AWAMUTIJ EUNNEES ONLY ONE DOUBLE WINNER ACHIEVEMENT OF DEPREDATION BY SPEARMINT llio Wnipa Racing Club, having received ono of an additional number of permits snnctionod by Parliament, held a totalisator mooting on Decernbor 4. .11)15. The following year tbo To Awanintii Cup was won by Depredation, tho only horse to have won that race and tho Auckland Cup. Depredation carried 5.7 in the former race and 7.5 in tho latter. lie was lame between the two races and was only got to the post at Ellerslie with tho greatest difficulty. In 1920 Starland, who had not won a race that season, was third in the To Awamutu Cup, and wont on to win the Auckland Cup at a good price. In 1923 Mr. W. If. Waok row's Boomerday ran second in tho To Awamutu Cuj). Murnnhi and To Kara wore unplaced. Boomerday had Avon tho To Awamutu Cup tho two preceding years, but in the Auckland Cup Muraahi and To Kara dead-heated for first, with Uoomerday a head away. Motero was unplaced in tho To Awamutu Cup of 1930, but got tho decision in tho Auckland Cup, and paid a sensational dividend. Three years later King's Knavo was third at To Awamutu and second in the Auckland Cup, while tho 1934 winner at Waipa, King March, was second in the big race. Last year's To Awamutu Cup winner Scotland did not start in tho Auckland Cup, but is engaged this year with 7.7. Winners of the To Awamutu Cup who were unplaced in the Auckland Cup were Cynic, "Woody Glen, Eoomerday, Polonett, Gala Day, Desert Glow, Prodico, In the Shade, Peter Jackson and Tools. Short-bred Candidate Dark Shadow, who won the To Awamutu Cup on Saturday, is doubtfully bred on both sides. His breeding is given as by Acre, or Leigh ton, from Madam Lobelia, a mare not in the Stud Book. Neither sire is impressive for a race like the Auckland Cup. Madam Lobelia, dam of Dark Shadow, is by Bunyan from Lobelia, by Albert. Bunyan was by Pilgrim's Progress from Neva by Stepniak, and was a halfbrother to Danube. Ho won the Wanganui Guineas, in which he easily beat Downfall, but did not train on. He sired the Winter Cup winner Bedford. Albert was a well-bred horse by Leolinus and a brother to the Auckland Cup winner Leopold, but ho was useless as a racehorse. Madam Lobelia is a sister to the dual Great Northern Hurdles and Steeples winner El Gallo and to Lady Lobelia, dam of Wiltshire, who twice won the Grand National Steeplechase. Another half-sister is Miss Lobelia, dam of Lady Faithful, who is dam of the brothers L'Allegro and Allegretto. For such a short-pedigreed mare, Lobelia has been a great stud success. From Sprinting Family Mazir drew attention to his Auckland Cup prospects by finishing strongly in the Te Awamutu Cup. lie is by Whirlwind from Tlie Begum, by Chief Ruler from Lucolla, by Lucullus from Seatonella, by Seaton Delaval from A morelle, by Phoebus Apollo from Lady Gertrude, by Cadogan. Lady Gertrude was dam of Blizzard, Euroclydon (N.Z. Cup) and Lady Rosslyn, grand-dam of Pampero, and third dam of Vladimir, Sir Solo (Auckland Cup), Art and John Barleycorn. Others of her descendants were Blimp, Master Doon, Kahikatoa and tho brilliant Australian filly, Bimilla. Seatonella was dam ot Arch Marella, a good winner in Australia, and tho Railway Handicap winner, Statuette. Tho Begum, who was a very fast mare up to seven furlongs, is a sister to tho G.N. Foal Stakes and Railway Handicap winner Supremacy. There is great speed on this side of the family. There is splendid stamina, at tho back of Whirlwind's pedigree, but most of tho descendants of Sundridgo have been sprinters, and there is a preponderance of speed on tho dam's side of Mazir's pedigree.

Sons of Musketoon Other Cup candidates in the To Awamutu Cup were Mungatoon, who was narrowly beaten by Mazir, and Master Brierly, who came from a long way back to finish close to the placed horses. Both aro sons of Musketoon, and Master Brierly has already proved his stamina in Australia. Musketoon, who was a very consistent racehorse nt all distances, is by Stetffast from Musk, by Myrain (son of Flying Fox) from Zara by Soliman, sire of Solferino. Stcdfast was by Chaucer from Bo Sure, by Sure foot. He was unlucky to be beaten by Sunstar in the Derby, and ho won the Jockey Club Stakes, Coronation Cup, Hardwicke Stakes and other good races. He sired Air Balloon, winner of the Alexandra Stakes, 2£ miles, and siro of Balloon King, winner of the Victoria Derby Another son of Stedfast is The Night Patrol, sire of Middle Watch, winner of the Victoria and A.J.C. St. Legers. The dam of Mungatoon is Mangamaire. by Marble Arch from Waiorongomai, by Hotehkiss from Bianca, by Black Faglo. Marblo Arch was by Isinglass from Mall, by Ltulas from Serpentine, by St. Serf. Marblo Arch was sir-3 of tjnclc Ned, twice second in the Auckland Cup, and Mullingar, a good winner. The dam of Master Brierly is Lady Brierly, by Archiestown from Ko Iwi, by Demosthenes from TJie Boyno, by the Melbourne Cup winner, Merriwee—breeding that is full of staying blood.
