TRIALS ON THE GRASS] SPRINT BY WILLIE DERBY RECEPTION TROTS SOLIDLY BY ABAYDOS The course proper, with the flags out 33ft., was available at Epsom yesterday, and several fast sprints were registered. Willie Derby took the honours by recording 1.6 for his best half-mile. Other pacers who impressed were Lucky Love, 1.6 3-5, Star Pronto, I.V 2-5, Munga Tangi, Bismuth, and Kewpie's Crest, 1.8. deception, 1.8, was the best of the trotters. Lucky Love (W. C. Willetts) began a second ahead of Willie Derby (L. Laver), from the mile and a-lialf, and just led at the mile in 2.35. Willie Derby drew level at the quarter post, to shade Lucky Love at the finish in 3.40. Willio Derby was pulling in the early stages, but sprinted the last halfmile in 1.6, doing his work well. Lucky Love, who is in great heart, ran 3.41 3-5, the final section in 1.6 3-5. Munga Tangi (J. Peters), Reception (A. J. Forbes), Bismuth (R. 'Gordon) and Young Rodney (L. Laver) went away as named from the mile and ahalf, but Reception-and Bismuth lost a little ground early, and Munga Tangi led all the way, to record 3.41 3-5, the last half-mile in 1.8. Reception, after a slow beginning, trotted attractively, and went 3.42, the last half in 1.8. She is improving with work in company. Young Rodney made a couple of breaks, but ran the last half in 1.9.

Gala Day (L. Cavalier) led out from Native Cole (J?. J. Byrne), but the latter tangled at the end of five furlongs, and Gala Day led past the mile in 2.32. Native Cole improved his position, but Gala Day just held him off in 3.44. She gave a sound display. Native Cole, who went 3.43 1-5, improved in the final stages, showing 1.11 for the half. Ho wore hopples for the first time since racing at Hamilton. Bedford (D. Smith) took 2.36 to run the first mile of a mile and a-half, and completed the journey in 3.50. Grand Triumph (L. Laver) went away from the two miles, and when some lengths past the mile and a-half was followed by Golden Maid (L. J. Mahoney). Grand Triumph ran the first mile in 2.36, hut broke nearing the mile and a-half. Golden Maid then went to the lead, to win easily in 3.45 3-5, the last half in 1.14 3-5. The sister to Kuini gave a faultless display. Roman Chief Shows Speed

Mountain Sun (W. Fleming) went away from the two miles, to be picked up by C'harteris Bay (G. Cole) and Roman Chief (A. ,T. Forbes), at the mile and a-half, but they were slow to go, Roman Chief losing a lot of ground. Mountain Sun was in the lead at the end of the mile and a-half in 3.55, and held C'harteris Bay off in 5.6 2-5, trotting the last half soundly in 1.11 2-5. C'harteris Bay ran the final half-mile in 1.11, and the mile and a-half in 3.44. Roman Chief was responsible for an impressive effort after settling down, going 2.59 for the last mile and a-quarter, the final half in 1.9. Win Huon (C. G. Lee) completed a mile and a-half in 3.49. He made two mistakes, but did not loso any ground. Bolinda King (A. Garnett) and Gay Sister (F. N. Kennerley) went away from the two miles, Dick Redmond (A. T. Newdick), joining them at the mile and a-half, but he broke at the crossing and lost ground. Two furlongs from home, Gay Sister made a bad lapse and Bolinda King had no trouble in winning easily in 4.54, the last half in 1.13. Both Bolinda King and Gay Sister were nnhoppled. Dick Redmond trotted the mile and a-half in 3.50, the last half soundly in 1.13 2-5. Victory for Silver Watch Forest Jewel (L. Mitchell) and Silver Watch (J. Mahoney), after going two furlongs in 395, were joined by Worthy Song (C. H. Goodall) and Kewpie's Crest (W. Gee), the last-named going away tangling. Silver Watch went to the front and reached the mile in 2.28 3-5, but he was under pressure to stall off Kewpie's Crest at the end in 3.38, the final half in 1.9 2-5. Kewpie's Crest made a good showing once he hit his straps, going 2.58 t Worthy Song went 3.1. Baron Grand (A. Garnett) •tf&nt away eight seconds ahead of Audo Patch (C! G. Lee) from the two miles, hut ho waited for the trotter, taking 1.26 for the half-mile. He ran the next mile in 2.30, completing the jourpey in 5.7 3-5. the last half easily in 1.11 3-5. Audo Patch gave a very sound display, trotting the last half in 1.10. Parrish Belle's Effort Parrish Belle (C. G. Lee), after working usefully on the dirb track, trotted n mile and a-half on the grass in 3.35. She gave a faultless exhibition, and could have improved on 1.11 for the last half. Worthy Princess (A. ,T. Forbes), did not relish the solid footing, and took 4.18 for a mile and a-half. Stardown (G. Webb 1 ) broke twice, and took 4.6 to complete a mile and a-half. Star Pronto (B. Dyer) took 40s to go from the mile and a-half to the mile and a-quarter disc, but covered the next ton furlongs in 2.55 2-5, the full distance in 3.35 2-5, sprinting the final half in 1.7 2-5.
